Dialogue
From config/dialogue/luxuries.json — this is a branching
conversation tree, not a fixed script, so these are every line this NPC's side of the
conversation can say across all of its branches, not one fixed order.
- Haven't seen you around before. You just wake up?
- Your kind have been popping up like daisies across the land. Dunno where you're from. Dunno what you're doing here. None of you seem keen to talk about it.
- That's alright, stranger. I didn't expect anything else.
- Hm, wish I could be more help to ya.
- (He nods soberly) As always.
- That's right. Strange-colored strangers walk the land.
- Hmph, well good morning to ya. Name's {{npcname}}. I roam around these parts, finding and trading what I can.
- Hah, this ain't a dream, stranger. 'Least not one you'd like to be in.
- (He inhales deeply, exhales, and gives a broad smile) Yeah, it's not bad out here at all. Mind the beasts, though. And the damned drifters.
- (They give you a tired smile) I can see it, friend. It's real, but it's treacherous. Demons stalk the land. And the world itself shifts.
- Aye, there's always more work to do.
- Hah, bold of you to assume I'm friendly! Welcome to my home.
- Ah, a new customer! How can I help you?
- Welcome back {{playername}}! What can I do for you?
- Kind of you to ask, traveler. It's {{npcname}}.
- There are whispers, traveler. Tales passed from one sun-scorched tongue to the next - of a place far beneath the dunes. An ancient tomb, where four trade empires once crossed paths and secrets were locked away in silence. It's not on any common map... but I may possess something rare.
- Many have tried. Most returned sunstruck, or didn’t return at all. The tomb is half-consumed by the desert itself, guarded by puzzles older than the founding of Falx’s line. Some say even the Rot turned back at its threshold. The silence there is not natural. It breathes. It waits.
- Then walk on, dreamer. Some things are best left to the wind and to the dead.
- Spoken like one born of purpose. But rusty gears is not enough, not for this. I require something rarer - something that fell from the stars. Bring me a silver knife. Freshly forged. Untouched by blood or rust. Only then shall I entrust you with the map.
- You truly have it... A blade that sings of the forge and starlight. You’ve earned this.
- Thanks!
- Take the map. May it guide you true, and may the sands be kind to your steps.
- Eager, are you? Wise or foolish - we shall see. This map leads to a chamber beneath the sands, once known as the Crossroads Below. Vaulted stone, buried secrets. It's not marked by stone, but by silence - and silence keeps its secrets well.
- Those who made it sealed themselves in, taking their names with them. But they left warnings, etched in stone and scratched into bone. Listen closely when you're down there... you might still hear them.
- Ah, you’ve come to the right person. I deal in opportunities most wouldn’t dare entertain. Tell me - are you the sort who seeks the rare and the extraordinary? If so, I have a map that may interest you. It marks the location of an ancient tower once used by a renowned group of warriors, the Forlorn Hope. Ever heard of them?
- The Forlorn Hope were a legendary order of warriors, handpicked by kings and lords for the most impossible tasks. These were soldiers who thrived where others faltered - masters of combat, feared and respected alike. Their name alone could inspire loyalty in allies and terror in enemies. This tower was one of their strongholds, a place where they trained, stored their spoils, and forged their plans. If the stories hold any truth, treasures of their time might still remain within its walls.
- A good question. Towers like this were built as fortresses, not just to protect, but to endure. This one is said to hold artifacts, perhaps even relics of the Forlorn Hope’s campaigns. Some say it’s a monument to their strength and legacy, a place where history still whispers to those bold enough to listen. But such places often hide dangers along with their secrets - proceed carefully.
- This map isn’t something I part with lightly. For 10 rusty gears, it’s yours. A fair price for a guide to potential riches, wouldn’t you agree?
- So, do you have the 10 rusty gears ready for trade? This is an offer I won’t make twice.
- Excellent choice. Here it is - the map I promised. It should guide you to the tower. They say such places often hold relics and treasures from the past, though they’re rarely unguarded. If you find anything of great value, bring it back to me - I’m always interested in rare artifacts. Good luck, adventurer.
- Most people live in the villages, holed up and cautious of any threats. And there certainly are threats, as you`ve likely seen. Not me, though. I like it out here. And besides, there`s a profit to be made.
- Ah, those miserable souls. Cursed ones. Drifters. They come and go, lost in grief and rage. Punished by God, they were. They could seek atonement, but nae, all they wish to do is spread more misery
- They challenged God himself. And God cast them down into the earth to wriggle like worms. They remain there still, in the deep. It`s not safe down below. Not safe at all.
- Aye, sometimes they slip their bonds and flee to the surface. But they are truly lost creatures. They can only wander blindly, causing what pain they may before they are inexorably drawn into their prison again.
- I`m afraid so, friend. But God shares wonders in kind. He created this world and those who inhabit it. And when he shows His face to us the earth itself trembles and we tremble with it. In awe of His glory
- Of course. Wealth is a virtue unto itself. There may yet come a time when the Great Arks appear before us and if that happens I would show them the fruits of my labor. I would lay out before them my gears, my gold and silver, and everything else I have gathered. And if I am deemed worthy, I will join them on their endless journey
- I'm always on the lookout, acquiring them from other traders, customers, and intrepid treasure hunters who roam the realm.
- Funny you ask! I've got a distinct request from a long-time customer. They're in search of a large intact Globe, as a present for their friend. Think you might stumble upon something like that in your travels?
- I appreciate your enthusiasm. Rest assured, if you find me such a treasure, I will reward you handsomely.
- You've managed to find the Globe?! I see. Let me have a closer look at this remarkable piece. (He carefully examines the Globe, tracing the intricate lines with a finger and studying the faded maps.)
- Incredible craftsmanship, truly a relic of its time. But there's something here, a mark that has piqued my curiosity. (The Trader continues to scrutinize the Globe, his brow furrowing slightly as he examines a particular spot on the map.)
- Indeed, my friend. Look here, at this specific mark. It seems deliberate, unlike the usual cartographic details. It appears to point to a grand structure - a university, if the rumors are to be believed. It’s said to be nestled in a ravine, surrounded by remnants of an old village. And here... (He taps on the map with a finger.) ...a tower, likely part of the university. Such places often hold secrets worth uncovering. If you’re bold enough to explore it, who knows what treasures you might find?
- That’s the question, isn’t it? Some claim it was a place of immense learning, where scholars and visionaries gathered. Others whisper that it housed forbidden knowledge - texts and artifacts deemed too dangerous for the world outside. Whatever the truth, it has long been abandoned, and the ruins are likely teeming with opportunities for those daring enough to venture there. (He pauses, his expression thoughtful.)
- I’ll need to bring this Globe to my customer, but before I do, let me copy down the markings. (The trader carefully examines the Globe, tracing the intricate details with a quill onto a piece of parchment.) There - this map should guide you to that university. What treasures or knowledge lie there, I cannot say, but it’s bound to be worth your while. If you find anything valuable, bring it back - I’m always interested in rare artifacts.
- And as promised, here's your well-earned reward of 10 rusty gears for bringing me the globe. Thank you very much!
- Hmm, not me. Best find yourself a treasure hunter. They're always sticking their noses into dangerous places. I might know where you could find one if you can spare a few a gears.
- Excellent. Thank you for the business.
- Here, I've marked on a map where you might find one of them. He had set up a small outpost there last time I passed by.
- There are plenty of stories. They gather like dirt on boots. Listening to them is certainly safer than checking them.
- There is one. But it holds no more certainty than the others.
- There were rumors about the existence of one place. Distant and large. So distant that speaking of it is already an achievement. People wanted to influence something that, as is customary, cannot really be influenced. They wanted to muffle... or even push away... the screech of metal in the middle of the day, and the feeling of rust in the air. But the world doesn't like it much when its manifestations are silenced.
- As they say: as they flared up, so they faded. As far as I know, it's unlikely anyone has forced themselves to visit that place again. After the terrible rumors that spread through the world following their failure. I even think a tradition appeared to leave that place alone.
- I don't really want to break tradition. And it's quite far - I trust rumors more than my own cart for such a distance. Yet safety comes first, it's no place for me alone. They also say danger outlives its masters.
- I think I have a map from there... I'm not sure it leads exactly to it, but the mark with the sun suggests otherwise. The sun - the symbol of that place...
- Yes, but not exactly payment. A confirmation of your abilities. Show that you can handle good metal - bring me a blackbronze pickaxe. If you're going there, better not go without purpose or craftsmanship.
- Of course... I see... yes, the pickaxe is solid. I think I can trust you with more than just the map.
- Very well. Take the map, and may your steps be careful where the sun once burned brightest.
- Yes, knowledge and items you'll need there. Considering the different rumors, the danger seems to still live there. You'll need equipment that can withstand an unexpected strike. You'll need fire - it doesn't burn willingly there, so take enough torches. Also - support, something to brace yourself against if the ground trembles. And medicine - absolutely. The pain from those events has most likely remained there, and the place will gladly share it with any visitor. Perhaps even with the first visitor...
- And one more thing. Don't expect answers from the map - just observe the things around you, that always helped me in difficult situations like yours.
- Then take the map and let your own judgement guide you. Some places are better understood in silence than in stories.
- Here you go I got another copy of the map.
