Gertrude sent me here with her own blend of gunpowder. Said the estate had no nitre left and that this was all of it, so I was not to waste a grain. I was to send lit explosives through the translocators to destroy the far ends, then smash the mechanisms here by hand. I was to sever the roads so the Rot could not travel.
I was so proud to be trusted with it! Proud that she chose me for the job. The work went smoothly, and I had just about finished. I remember thinking I’d like to see the fruits of my labor on the other sides of the translocators.
What a fool I was to have that thought, because it shortly came true. The Goldfinch translocator flared to life. A bomb came through, lit, packed just like she had taught me to do during the briefing.
I understand now why she insisted I use that device to arrive here. Why she told me to stick around after I was done to make sure the Translocator Nexus had become entirely inoperational. I’ve been exposed to the Rot. I’ve breathed the air here for too long. She could not risk letting me return. This was never meant to be a round trip. Nevertheless, I have destroyed what I can reach. These translocators will not carry the Rot any farther.
Gertrude Goldfinch was my patron, my employer, and in the end, my executioner. I do not curse her for it. I only wish she had not let me believe I was coming home.
