Text

No can do. We’re mercenaries, not a warband, and we don’t intend to make ourselves this big of a target.

Besides, the Svanmarck Estate is a loyal customer of ours. It’d be most regrettable if news reached them that you attempted to have their matriarch killed outright, but I reckon we might just forget about it real conveniently if you pay off your debts to us before the next full moon.

What made you think we were going to take on more work while you had an open tab, anyway?

Isaak of Koritok

I beseech you, wicked wolves of the wilds!

My boy was taken prisoner just a sunrise ago by roadside robbers. I barely got away with my life. They’re asking a ransom much greater than what I can pay, so instead I will offer all that I do have to you, heirlooms of mine and mine ancestors.

Please return my boy to me safely. I care not what happens to the slavers. They are camped out a thousand paces or so down the road to Erak ambushing caravans.

Indrinaak, I need your advice.

The Askannon job is beginning to move out of scope. They just keep buying up low-value land. What little coin they manage to scrape together vanishes into more holdings. I can’t tell what they intend to do with all of it.

As a result, I’m struggling to keep eyes on Havald. Made none the easier by the fact he moves among his people like some commoner, without a fixed residence to follow him from or jewelry to make him stand out. It all makes him exceedingly hard to track.

Jackal

Found the cache disturbed but empty. Visited Nicola and she insisted on her life that she’d paid her dues. She’s not stupid enough to lie about this stuff.

Damn these scavengers. I think it might be that defector Weasel. They’ve been too much of a nuisance as of late anyway, dragging our good name through the mud. I’ll be driving them out of town personally.

Isaak, I don’t think I can sleep until I see some sign, anything, that this is all over. That after years of strife I found the right people to solve this problem and that they have solved it rightly once and for all and that I can rest again, truly rest, knowing that me and my charges are safe.

I want to take your word for it, truly I do, but the nightmares have not left me. Please feel free to ignore my ramblings, for I own nothing more to pay you with. But I beg of you, if you could, leave evidence here. A token taken off of his person. I just need to see proof, I won’t take it from the cache, and if I do you know where to find me.

Is there anybody left?

The world has shifted. I scarcely recognize any of it. But I do recognize our sigil. I didn’t think any would have survived the Rot. But now the Rot is gone.
The roads I used to prowl have disappeared. I don’t see the city walls on the distant horizon. Nor the silhouette of its towers rising far above them. Am I still in Undland?

There’s just… trees and grass. There was a time where I would’ve wanted nothing more for the world, but I realize immediately just how much I miss the people. If anybody finds this, I am starting to travel eastward looking for other survivors, and I ask you to follow me.

Is this how the people of the Old World communicated? It feels silly, leaving notes below trees. I wonder what you would think of us, continuing your traditions.

Perhaps not your traditions exactly. We use your symbol now as trail markers. And we use them to exchange gifts with each-other. It’s customary to take something and leave something behind. I found my favorite toy in this cache. A clay figurine of a hound.

Some of us use them as places of worship. Hard to find churches on the road! My Nana taught me to always carry a knife on my person, to touch up the carvings when I can. I reckon this was important to you. I hope that someday when I’m gone, those that come after me will look after what I left behind, as well.
