Day 1. Faulkner has ordered closure of all canal ingress points and instructed us to maintain order among the detained.
Approximately 43 detainees inside the reservoir at lockdown moment:
- 17 labourers
- 11 traders/boatmen
- 5 accompanying guards
- 6 miscellaneous travelers
- 4 children
Per Faulkner’s directive:
- No one exits until a cure is found.
- Anyone showing signs of lesions or fever is to be separated to the sick zone in the lower reservoir.
- No gatherings larger than six persons without warden supervision.
Rations have been seized, catalogued, and redistributed. Perishables - primarily fish from one highly disgruntled merchant - will last the first week if shared equitably. Merchant protested but complied after formal promise of compensation. Let us hope the quarantine resolves swiftly.

Day 7. Spirits are uneasy. Individuals demand answers we cannot give.
Two attempted to bribe passage through the south sluice. Sluice is jammed anyway - collapse from Faulkner’s blast. Both offenders placed in restricted quarters for twelve hours; released afterward with warning.
Faulkner requests written updates only. Claims he is “concentrating”.
We have asked for clear medical procedure and received nothing in return as of yet.
Standing water in the lower reservoir sick zone has already turned foul. Several of the initially isolated labourers have succumbed to disease overnight. We have begun herding detainees to sleep on the walkways to reduce exposure.
Child of the traveler Roland displays fever but no lesions.
Roland pleaded for exemption; request granted on grounds that forced separation would incite further unrest. Both have been moved to the sick zone.

Day 13. Fatigue increasing among both detainees and wardens.
Of the original 43 detained, 22 remain alive. Most recent losses occurred overnight in the sick zone.
The dead are piling up below, but with limited ventilation we cannot safely burn them. The sick that are still capable are ordered to move them to the collapsed tunnel until a permanent solution is found.
Three labourers attempted to bypass the walkway cordon during the night. Claimed they sought fresher air. Returned to designated area and reprimanded.
The late Roland’s daughter asked us whether he would “wake once the air is clearer”. Informed this was a question for Faulkner.
Ration supplies remain stable, albeit at reduced allotment. With fewer individuals to feed, current stores may last much longer than projected.
First lesions observed on one of the accompanying guards previously assessed as healthy.
Isolated to the sick zone.
Still no medical procedure from Faulkner.

Day 24? Day 25? The record must continue.
Population estimate: Nine remain in varying stages of decay.
Several are unable to stand. Most do not speak. Those who still breathe do so shallowly.
Movement between walkways has ceased. The sick zone is silent.
Faulkner has not responded to our last reports. We believe he has relocated deeper into the tunnels to continue his work.
Hope is… resting.
Their sight has fully left them, though they still turn their head when I speak.
My own condition is manageable. Previous attempts to doff my armor have resulted in torn skin.
Rot progressing along forearm and ribs. Pain intermittent.
Alas. The ledger is not for complaints.
Rations still adequate. Hardly consumed. No reason to maintain allotment schedule.
There is little more to report. Procedures remain in place with no-one left to enforce them upon.
Still we hold our posts. It is what is expected of us. We have given everything we have to this duty and now there is nothing left.
I will play for Hope. On Faulkner’s piano. I will play a piece we both remember. I will burn it into my muscle memory if I need to, that I might still play it when I lose my own sight. And I pray to the Gods that this is the last thing we hear before the black sick takes our minds from us, too.
